Cleghorn
"A Place You Can Call Home"

"It was a charming village with wide streets and a central park," said Reverend Adams Cleghorn, the founding father of this community. Much has changed since that comment was made, however, the town of Cleghorn has kept its image as a peaceful place in the Iowa countryside. As of the last census in 2000, the population was an estimated 250 people, a decrease from the previous decade. Still, the town has sustained its reputation as being an excellent area to raise a family.

History
Cleghorn is located on the main line of the Illinois Central Railroad, and was built on a sloping hill. Since trains had to climb up an elevation to reach the settlement, it became known as a flag station. The railroad brought a great deal of industrial business to the small farming town and soon after, a warehouse and stockyards were constructed there. The municipality was formed in 1901 and the townsfolk soon saw a new school and church erected. The majority of people who settled here were from Scottish, English and Irish backgrounds.

Today, Cleghorn cherishes its small town, family values life style. Two manufacturers are located here, Taylor Refrigeration and Wetherell Manufacturing, providing jobs. A beautiful new library, built in conjunction with the local school is a welcome addition to the town. Many other conveniences, local grade schools, local banking and a combined restaurant and convenience store, add to the quality of life in this small but vibrant community.

The Miniature Golf Tournament is sanctioned by the Lions Clubs of Iowa and Keep Iowa Beautiful. Tournament play takes place on the uniquely crafted Heritage Links Miniature Golf Course located on the northwest side of the MMC Middle School Campus in Cleghorn, surrounded by a Native Iowa Arboretum. This educational arboretum consists of 40 different identified native Iowa species of trees.

Proceeds of the tournament go toward the Lions Club International Fund, the Iowa Lions Foundation, and the Leader Dog program, along with a designated Keep Iowa Beautiful environmental litter control recycling and community enhancement project.

Parks
Cleghorn Central Park is a community gathering place with picnic area, playground, restrooms and tennis courts.

Native Iowa Arboretum - The first tree was planted in the Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn Middle School Native Iowa Arboretum on Saturday, April 17, 1996. This interdisciplinary curriculum service learning activity resulted in forty additional trees being planted. Forty of the forty-one trees are species that were native to Iowa when it became a state in 1846, with the research being done in science class. The positioning and plotting of the trees was completed using computer graphing in the Industrial Technology Education Laboratory. Selected students in social studies classes visited the Abstract Office in Cherokee to obtain the legal description of the proposed arboretum area north of the Cleghorn MMC Middle School building. The donated trees were planted by MMC Middle School students and staff along with community volunteers. Many of the tree identification markers were placed in cooperation with a Lutheran Brotherhood Service project. The Arboretum was coordinated and is being maintained by retired educator, Robert Byers. In a combined MMC Middle School and community effort, an Environmental Shelter was constructed in the middle of the present Arboretum. The completed Environmental Shelter was dedicated in the spring of 1999 and named in memory of Justin Rassel, a MMC Middle School student who would have graduated with the class of 2002. Visitors to the Native Iowa Arboretum can also enjoy the Heritage Links Mini-Golf Course, which was constructed during the summer of 2000.
