Meriden
"Quiet and Friendly"
Five miles west of Cherokee, lies the quiet yet
friendly community of Meriden. The close proximity
to the larger city limits Meriden's retail potential
but not its capacity to grow. Meriden offers a high
quality environment in which to live, offering low
property taxes and a full venue of municipal services.
The current population of 184 people is vigorous
in its urban self-sufficiency. In past years, the
residents have raised funds to construct their own
fire station/city hall and a multi-purpose community
center.

History
In the beginning, Meriden was a settlement known
as Hazard, which was developed in December of 1869.
When the railroad construction (stemming from Sioux
City) stopped there for the winter, a "wet grocery"
business popped up and eventually grew into the
present day town. The name change from Hazard to
Meriden was a request by the locals to the U.S.
Postal Service in 1874, with municipality being
granted in 1882. At its height, the township had
over 400 people, which has since declined. Many
businesses still operate here including a café,
garage, grain elevator, antique store, telephone
company, and an earth-moving construction firm.
