Cherokee County is seeking a qualified, collaborative, and service-oriented professional to serve as
County Engineer and lead the County’s Secondary Roads Department.
The Cherokee County Board of Supervisors is accepting applications for the position of County Engineer.
The County Engineer is responsible for the overall planning, direction, coordination, and administration of the
County Secondary Road System, including the safe and efficient construction, maintenance, and engineering
of county roads, bridges, drainage structures, rights-of-way, and related infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide professional engineering leadership and overall management of the Secondary Roads Department.
• Plan, design, administer, and inspect road, bridge, culvert, drainage, and related public improvement
projects.
• Prepare project plans, specifications, estimates, bid documents, contracts, annual budgets, and the
County’s five-year construction program.
• Manage state, federal, and local funding and prepare required reports for the Board of Supervisors, Iowa
Department of Transportation, and other agencies.
• Supervise department personnel and administer hiring, performance management, and discipline in
accordance with applicable law, County policy, and Board authority.
• Build effective working relationships with employees, elected officials, contractors, governmental
agencies, property owners, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related engineering field.
• Current licensure as a Professional Engineer in Iowa, or eligibility to obtain Iowa licensure promptly upon
appointment.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance
requirements.
• Knowledge of roadway and bridge engineering, construction administration, budgeting, personnel
supervision, and applicable state and federal requirements.
Preferred: Prior experience as an Iowa county engineer, assistant county engineer, or in a comparable publicsector engineering leadership role. Iowa land surveyor licensure is desirable but not required.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Cherokee County offers a competitive
