POSITION SUMMARY: As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the hospital RN contributes professional nursing knowledge and skills in the provision and management of care to patients and their families. Maintains a practice environment that reflects the Professional Practice Model and in collaboration with other caregivers. Once fully cross trained and independent in other nursing departments, the hospital RN provides support and additional resources to those departments throughout Cherokee Regional during times of vacancy, high acuity, and census variations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Required: Associates Degree in Nursing
- Preferred: Bachelor of Science (BSN) degree in Nursing
License/Registration/Certification:
- Required: Current RN licensure, State of Iowa or compact state
- Required: CRMC Safety Companion Course within 6 months of employment
- Required: Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification or obtained within the first 6 months of employment
- Required: OB Department only – NRP
- Required: ED Department only – TNCC within one year of orientation date
Experience:
- Preferred: Prior hospital experience
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, required.
- Ability to operate a personal computer with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
- Ability to learn office and organization-specific software.
- Highly developed problem-solving skills.
- Ability to adapt to flexible patient schedules and frequent interruptions.

ADDITIONAL EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE- OB DEPARTMENT
- Labor & Delivery, Postpartum, and Nursery orientation completion
- STABLE certifications within 1 year of orientation completion
- Perinatal Fellowship completion
- Ability to interpret and assess fetal monitor strip and utilize proper interventions based on interpretation
ADDITIONAL EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE- ER DEPARTMENT
- The ER Nurse is responsible for the provision of emergency room direct care
- Responsible for Emergency department orientation completion
- TNCC to be obtained within first year of employment
- Responsible for completing assigned competencies.
- Strong background in basic principles and procedures of emergency patient care
- Must demonstrate high ability to think critically
- Must provide safe, expedient, and effective care to ER patients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Clinical Excellence and Patient Care
- Assesses the needs of patients and families, providing appropriate teaching and making the necessary referrals to provide continuity of care.
- Develops an individual plan of care using a collaborative approach with the patient/family and health care team.
- Promptly completes documentation to assure an accurate legal record of patient’s care.
- Delivers high quality care utilizing the nursing process while demonstrating knowledge and clinical
- skills of the specialty required on the assigned unit in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of care.
- Applies conflict resolution techniques.
- Utilizes holistic approach (considering physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, educational, safety, and related criteria) appropriate to the age of the patients and families served in the assigned service area.
- Delegates and provides direction for other healthcare team members within their scope of practice and holds them accountable for their involvement in the plan of care.
- Utilizes critical thinking in developing nursing interventions while maintaining responsibility and accountability for the knowledge of conditions of assigned patients.
Clinical Excellence and Patient Education
- Assesses and chooses teaching strategies appropriate to the patient’s and their families’ age specific needs, culture, gender, readiness to learn and level of comprehension.
- Consults appropriate resources within the hospital to provide specialized education.
- Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety is a priority by preventing errors, accidents and infections and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.
Effective Communication/Teamwork
- Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with patients, families, healthcare team members and other customers. Verbal communication is clear and precise. Written communication is legible, if handwritten, and done in a timely manner using approved abbreviations.
- Verbally presents factual, concise, and timely information and/or patient care data to the healthcare team, patients and/or family members in a professional manner.
- Completes real-time EMR documentation in accordance with hospital and unit policies.
- Hand-offs done with attention to detail and with safety as a high priority.
- Serves as Safety Companion in both Med-Surg and Emergency Departments as needed.
- Engages in the onboarding and orientation of new staff as assigned.
- Takes responsibility to maintain own competencies.
