Salary $44,532.80 – $65,998.40 Annually

Shift differential of $0.90 per hour for second shift and $1.00 per hour for third shift and a strong opportunity for advancement, growth and development.

The CCUSO program serves civilly committed clients that have discharged their criminal sentence, but through a civil process, have been deemed high risk to sexually reoffend if not confined in a secure treatment setting.

Desired Qualifications:
Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and experience equal to two years of fulltime work involving direct contact with people in a therapeutic role in a residential care or treatment setting.
  2. Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and experience equal to two years of full time work involving oversight of incarcerated adults or juveniles.
  3.  Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, and experience equal to two years of full-time work in law enforcement.
  4. A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one, two or three), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in a social or behavioral science such as Sociology, Psychology, Human Services, Criminal Justice, or other related field of study equals one year of full­time experience.

Additional Qualification Requirements

Within a period of time after hire, as determined by the appointing authority, persons in this class may be required to complete security training and treatment program training.

Duties: Assists mental health staff in therapeutic work and performs a wide range of security functions in creating a maximally therapeutic environment for the care and treatment of sex offenders with mental abnormalities and/or personality disorders that have been civilly committed directly from prison to the CCUSO (Civil Commitment Unit for Sexual Offenders) program; performs related work as required.

The Psychiatric Security Specialist provides direct-care services of both a security and treatment nature at the Civil Commitment Unit For Sexual Offenders (CCUSO), located on the campus of the Cherokee Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, Iowa.

Routine duties of the Psychiatric Security Specialist job include, but are not limited to: day to day supervision of various patient activities at the CCUSO facility, facilitation of psycho-educational group activities, documentation of patient behaviors, operation of the master control center, and escort and supervision of patients on medical trips outside the facility.
